An introduction to registering for races.

What you need to know about about registering for races.

Usually there are multiple ways to register for a race, but the best way is to do it ahead of time through BikeReg.com. This way you can print a receipt that you will need for reimbursement from the university club office. It also makes the morning of race day less hectic since all you will have to do is check in.

Before registering for a race, you should get your collegiate racing license from USA Cycling. This license will have your category on it, make sure you select the correct racing category when registering. Print two copies of the registration confirmation and bring one to race day. The other copy will be used for reimbursement, since you will probably lose or destroy the copy you bring to the race.

Some Race Day Tips

  • Check In: Bring appropriate clothing for waiting in line to check in. There is nothing worse than freezing in the wind or rain before your race. If you are competing in the first race, you should get there as soon as check in opens. This will ensure that you have enough time to use the facilities and warm up on a trainer.
  • Hydrate: Use the facilities and hydrate well, but don't drink so much that you will be uncomfortable during the race. Continue to hydrate by taking sips during warm up.
  • Warm Up: Use a trainer and position it as close to the start line as possible. You should also be set up on fairly level surface. Use the 20 - 30 minutes during warm up to focus on the race and imagine what will happen. You should also imagine a crash happening and how you will stay calm in order to avoid catastrophe. This kind of preparation will give you confidence and allow you to stay focused during the race.
  • Line Up: Get to the line up towards the front. Otherwise you may not be able to hear the race officials describing the hazards of the course or other crucial race information.
