With technology changing every day, its important to know what will make you faster and what is a waste of money. Here are some basic principles to keep in mind.
Weight savings are more important on rotating parts. Specifically, lighter weight tires, rims, and pedals will make you accelerate faster, whereas a lighter saddle or handlebars will not have much effect. Aerodynamics can be more important than overall weight depending on speed. Since spokes are moving extremely fast through the 12 o'clock position, bladed spokes can provide significant benefit for high speed racing. Rigidity is important at the bottom bracket and handlebar/fork areas. Larger diameter tubing is a good way to improve rigidity. Stiff soled shoes are also important for efficient power transfer.
